Foundation installation we do in Columbus

  • Slab on grade

A single concrete slab poured on a packed base. It's the simpler choice for a garage, a shop or a one-level home where you don't need space below.

  • Footings and foundation walls

Footings and walls that go down below the floor. This is the choice when you want a basement or a crawl space under the house for pipes and ductwork.

Should my new house go on a slab or a full foundation?

Foundation installation in Columbus means building the concrete base that carries your house, garage or addition above the soil. It's either a slab on grade or a traditional foundation with footings and walls, and the right one depends on your lot and how you'll use the space.

Most of the foundation calls we get are for a new house, garage, shop or addition, and the first question is what it should sit on. A slab on grade and a full foundation with walls are built differently, so the price moves with that choice, the size of the footprint and how much digging, hauling and base work your lot needs. The schedule mostly turns on the weather and the city's inspections, because I'd rather move a pour date than put concrete down in the wrong weather. Your written estimate lays out what goes into your number.

Foundation work from the dig to the pour

We start by talking through whether a slab or a full foundation suits your lot and how you'll use the space. Want a basement? I'll be straight about what keeping it dry takes.

  • Layout and dig

We stake out the footprint and dig down to firm ground, and we haul off the loose dirt instead of raking it level.

  • Footings and drainage

We form and pour concrete footings to spread the weight, then check where water runs so it drains away from the building.

  • A packed base

We pack the base in layers, the same ground work we do on concrete parking lots, so the concrete doesn't sink with the dirt.

  • Steel and the pour

We set rebar, the steel that keeps the concrete tied together if it cracks, and we schedule the pour around the weather instead of the calendar.

Why people in Columbus call Columbus Concrete

We're known for doing the ground work right before any concrete shows up. That work is hidden once the building goes up, and it's the first thing people want to cut. The base is where I'd spend your money, because a nice floor finish can't make up for a base that settles.

  • I look at every job myself

I come out to measure, look at the lot and write the estimate. When we pour, I'm on site with our crew, so the person who planned the job is there for it.

  • Full time since 2023

I started out pouring small pads, walks and steps for neighbors. I learned from people who'd been at it a lot longer than me before I went full time in 2023.

  • Licensed and fully insured

Nebraska has contractors register with the state Department of Labor, but registration doesn't vouch for the work. Judge us by how we handle the ground under it.

Foundation questions we hear

What is the best way to choose between a slab and a traditional foundation?

Weigh what a slab saves against what it gives up. General building guidance says a slab usually costs less and is easier to build, more accessible and more energy efficient. The trade-off is limited access to the utilities underneath, along with moisture, radon and insulation challenges. I'll walk your lot with you and help you weigh it for how you'll use the space.

How deep does a foundation need to go in Columbus?

The base of the foundation has to sit below the frost depth for the area, so freezing moisture in the soil can't heave the ground under it. The depth for your job comes from your building plans, and we dig to what they call for.

Will dampproofing keep my basement dry?

Not on its own. Dampproofing helps keep a basement a little drier, but it won't stop water under pressure or bridge the small shrinkage cracks concrete gets, so by itself it doesn't prevent leaks or flooding. If you want a basement, we'll go over drainage and what else your walls need before we dig.

How do I get a building permit for a foundation in Columbus?

The city issues the permit along with the inspections it requires, and whoever applies schedules those inspections with the Building Department. Before we start, we check with the right city office about your job. If a permit is needed, we help you get it lined up so the paperwork doesn't hold up the pour.

How much does foundation installation cost in Columbus?

Your cost comes down to the size of the building, whether it sits on a slab or on footings and walls, and how much digging, hauling and base work your lot needs. A basement adds the most digging and wall work. A lot that needs fill or drainage work adds to either choice, and your written estimate breaks each of those out.

What causes cracks in a new concrete foundation?

Most cracks in new concrete come from shrinkage as it dries and from ground that moves under it. On slabs we cut control joints, which are planned lines that give the concrete a place to crack where we chose. We also keep it from drying too fast while it cures, which is the wait while it gains strength.

Foundation installation on Columbus lots

Floodplain makes up over 19% of Platte County's acreage, so it comes up a lot here. On a Columbus floodplain lot, the lowest floor of a new home, basement included, has to be raised to the required flood protection elevation, and that can make a basement a poor fit. Building in the floodplain also waits on approval from the city's Floodplain Administrator. We check where your lot stands before we plan where the floor and any basement can sit.

Platte County has no county zoning, so if your lot is within 2 miles of Columbus, you contact the city instead of the county. Many of our calls are for garages, shops and additions, and we do the same ground work on jobs in Columbus, Schuyler and other cities around the area. If you're not sure we cover your place, give us a call and ask.
